Family Health and Fitness Day (6/8/2024)

Key Facts

According to the National Recreation and Park Association:

  • Children today experience record levels of obesity and preventable diseases like hypertension and Type II Diabetes, caused in part by a decrease in physical activity. Using parks helps children move more and in the long run fight these diseases and live longer.
  • Active children show more brain activity, and they are 20 percent more likely to earn an A in English or math.
  • Several studies have confirmed that separation from nature is detrimental to human development, health and wellbeing, and that regular contact with nature is required for good mental health.
  • For individuals with arthritis, walking can help reduce pain, as well as improve mobility and quality of life.

Family Health & Fitness Day, 06/08/2024

Every year, on the second Saturday of June, the NRPA promotes Family Health & Fitness Day. The purpose of this special day is to promote the importance of parks and recreation and their role in keeping our community healthy and active.

Interested in participating? Participate in any of the following activities to help celebrate (bonus points for activities in one of our amazing parks/recreation areas)!

  • Take a walk to visit your local park or trail – something as simple as a daily walk can help you live a healthier life.
  • Cook a healthy meal – get creative and try a new healthy recipe.
  • Enroll in a in-person or virtual fitness programs – a customized exercise program developed is a great way to stay fit and will bring you a wide range of physical and mental benefits.
  • Create your own exercise routine – whether it’s bike riding, jogging, going to the gym, etc.
  • Play outside – when children are outside, they are more likely to try new activities and explore the natural environment.
