August is National Breastfeeding Month

Celebrating National Breastfeeding Month: August 2024

The Importance of Breastfeeding

August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to emphasize the vital role of breastfeeding in the health and well-being of both babies and mothers. According to the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), exclusive breastfeeding for the first 4 to 6 months provides the best start for infants. It not only boosts children’s health, development, and survival but also offers significant health benefits for mothers, including reduced risks of ovarian and breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.

National Breastfeeding Month and World Breastfeeding Week

Each August, the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) leads a social media campaign to support breastfeeding families. This year’s theme, “This is Our Way,” highlights the importance of breastfeeding and focuses on supporting babies and families. World Breastfeeding Week, from August 1-7, kicks off the month with various online actions and discussions.
