Girls on the Run®

teamGirls on the Run® (GOTR) is a nationally recognized program that educates and prepares third through fifth grade girls for a lifetime of self-respect, self esteem, and healthy living. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

DHD#10 completed its ninth year of coordinating the GOTR® program in 2010. To date, over 8,000 third through fifth grade girls from 7 counties have been served by the program between 2001 and 2009. The program operates as ten week after-school program that uses physical activity and experiential learning to teach very specific and well-defined social and personal character development skills. It is led by a certified GOTR® coach.

running GOTR® is built upon strong support and collaboration from the communities served. Financial collaboration has been received from numerous funding sources including local foundations, boards, services clubs, funds, businesses, sponsorships and grants. Contributions are essential to assure program continuation, however the foundation of the program is build on the volunteer coach mentors, and the support of the local school districts that host the project in their school systems.

Objective

The Girls on the Run® objective is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants. The goal is fewer adolescent pregnancies and eating disorders, less depression and suicide attempts, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.
